If we wait until we are ready we will be waiting for the rest of our lives

The week from 13th May to 19th May 2019 is awareness week for Dying Matters.  Dying Matters say that “if we wait until we are ready we will be waiting for the rest of our lives”.  They are encouraging people to talk about dying, death and bereavement which is something people firmly do not like to talk about.  It is a sensitive issue and it can sometimes be grounds for contention with people vying over estates and money and some people feel that they will be perceived as greedy if they start talking about inheritances and so on.  This is also a really sensitive issue when people are poorly and unlikely to survive their illnesses and is perceived as a little ‘icky’ to talk about these things openly with friends and family.  Even as a Solicitor who has been working in the field of Wills and Estate Planning for over 20 years and married to a paramedic who deals with this aspect of life on a daily basis, even we are not ready to discuss our funeral arrangements and what we want to happen on our death.  Having Wills put in place is the easy part sometimes for people although many do leave it too late to a point in their life, when they are ill or are contemplating death.  It is really important for everybody to take legal advice to know where they stand and so they can make decisions about their funeral or about who will be responsible for administering their estates in keeping with their wishes in their Wills and so on.  There are many charities and organisations who can help the bereaved cope with their grief and your Solicitor should also be able to point you in their direction if you need further assistance in this regard.   In the meanwhile, Dying Matters are raising awareness and giving us an unparalleled opportunity to place the importance of dying, death and bereavement firmly on the national agenda. https://www.dyingmatters.org/
