Spread the Warmth
Last year we made it our aim to tackle loneliness within our community. As a firm we feel we have a social responsibility to help our community. For this reason we have decided to continue our Spread the Warmth campaign. Our campaign aims to help vulnerable and elderly people that could be lonely or at risk of loneliness. The winter months can be a particularly lonely time of year and many vulnerable people are being left to suffer in silence.
It has been found in the UK there are around 3.6 million people who live alone, of which, 2 million are aged 75 and over. Studies have also found that 1.9 million people in the UK often feel alone or invisible. The impact of loneliness can damage our mental health and has even been shown to be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Unfortunately, these statistics will continue to grow if we do not do something about it.
We decided to create biscuit boxes, with the idea that members of the community will pick up a box from our office, knock on an elderly neighbour or relative’s door and enjoy them with a hot drink.
In 2017 we gave away over 200 boxes and this year we are hoping to build on this success and give away even more. We want the Basingstoke community to show their kindness by sharing these boxes; the simplicity of a cup of tea and a biscuit along with a conversation could be the highlight of that person’s day. Claire Redhead, our Wills & Estate Planning Partner said “It is important to take the time to get to know your neighbours and ensure those around you aren’t feeling lonely. If we can all make the extra effort to regularly check up on our neighbours we can help make a difference to loneliness within our community.”
We have had lots of boxes picked up from our office already and we would love to hear about your experiences. If you can take a selfie with the person you have shared the biscuits with and share it via our social media accounts @ClarkeandSon with the hashtag #SpreadtheWarmth we can continue to help raise awareness this winter.
